CSG is pleased to bring you this guest blog by Rudy Fig and Katie Carpenter about their co-curated show, Sweet Hot Mess!
Saturday, August 25, 6pm-12am
Rudy: Sweet HOT Mess is a seriously fun and dynamic art exhibition that will bring some very sweet art here to our very own Twin Cities. The exhibition will feature fine art as well as a cake decorating competition whose participants are all local bakeries and patisserie artists. Each bakery has been assigned to create a cake based on one of the artists in the show. Many of the visual artists involved are national and international, established fine artists working in the lowbrow, contemporary, and pop surrealism genre. Pop Surrealism is a relevant and exciting art movement that is taking over the world and is especially popular on the west coast.
Our selection of artists includes Scott Hove, Sunae Naoshi, Dc Ice, Eric Joyner, Miles Mendenhal, Jenny Holiday, Martha Rich, Miss Mindy, Caramelaw and Casey Weldon. In addition to our featured artists, we also have selected some very talented local artists to create pieces with a loose theme of Sweets.
Popular for his “Cake Land” installations, Scott is a self-taught artist who creates amazing three dimensional cake sculptures that appear to be real cakes infused with unexpected elements like animals
jaws or dolls heads. He tells stories and explores the relationship between what is beautiful and what is brutal through the use of faux cake sculpture. He has also designed some pretty amazing cake shoes…
ummm yeah. We like cake shoes around here.

Naoshi is an artist based in Yokohama, Japan, who creates sand paintings. Naoshi has directed workshops on Sunae painting creation and has shown her work around the globe. Her work features brightly colored girls and explores everyday thoughts and emotions. “When I make Sunae, I am always inspired to live brightly each day, just like the sparkly, shiny sand.” Naoshi brings a very delightful twist
to traditional sand art.

DC ice is a Minnesota resident whose illustrative work explores a world that is both sinister and sweet. She has a BFA in illustration and has illustrated quite a few books. Her work is candy coated in the darkest and most magical way.
You’ve seen his work. Robots, donuts, awesomeness. Eric Joyner is an accomplished artist whose
beautifully rendered paintings feature a throw-back world of vintage tin Robots and Donuts. He recently had a solo exhibition at the popular Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, CA. But really, nobody can paint a donut like Eric Joyner.

Print Making residency recipient and was featured on Bravo channels “Work of Art.” He has created
some crazy pop art that looks as if it’s dripping in goo as well as black and white screen prints. We are
very excited to see where he takes his work in the future.

kitschy atmosphere that is loaded with frozen charlotte dolls, sprinkled cupcakes and polka-dotted retro
signage. They reside in New Jersey where they create everything from beautiful scrap books to hand

Martha is Philadelphia based artist whose work is driven from “stored moments” rather than logic. She makes a point to live in the moment and this is very much embodied in her popular paintings. She has a penchant for painting food and enjoys using words in her work. Her commercial work has been used in
music videos, advertising, books and beyond and she shares her fine art internationally. If you aren’t
familiar with Martha Rich I would highly recommend visiting her website and reading her artists
Miss Mindy’s artwork makes you feel like you’ve just waltzed in to a magical circus burlesque show that
is run by elves. She comes from a very creative, talented family and her clients range from Nickelodeon
to the Hard Rock Café. She recently finished being resident artist and Disney’s Wonderground Gallery
and she exhibits her work around the globe and in the collections of her high profile patrons.
